Quoridor is a percussion ensemble for 4 percussionists that is to be performed alongside the playing of a full game of Quoridor. Quoridor is a 2-player board game designed by Mirko Marchesi in which both players take turns moving a pawn or placing obstacles on a 9x9 board until one player makes it across to their opponent’s side. During this piece, 2 performers will be playing the board game. As they do, each and every move taken in the game will translate to an analogous musical change. The outcome is a soundscape that evolves alongside the game state.
Just as every game of Quoridor is unique, each performance of this piece is one of a kind. Moreover, different game strategies can have a dramatic impact on the resulting sound, revealing exciting new sonic possibilities in each performance. As you watch and listen to this piece, follow along with the game and listen to how each move mirrors the transformation of the music.
