Battleship is a percussion ensemble for 4 performers (2 percussionists and 2 assistants) that is to be performed alongside the playing of a full game of Battleship. Battleship is a 2-player board game in which both players secretly mark the location of 5 ships on a 9x9 board, then take turns guessing which spaces their opponent placed their ships, attempting to hit and sink them. Once a player sinks all their opponent’s ships, they win. During this piece, the 2 percussionists will be playing the board game. As they do, every game action they take will be communicated entirely through the music. The result is a piece which changes as the game develops, generating an entirely new piece each performance. The performance actively engages the percussionists in the spirit of play, rendering their every choice as a source of musical material.
